Between the increasing popularity of   drone photography for real estate  , the new   FAA drone guidelines  , and the lower cost of entry for a high-quality drone, there are more drone photography operators than ever. To ensure that you get the best quality photographs and   video  for the money you spend, do some due diligence. Compare at least two aerial drone operators before booking your photo or video shoot.

Closing more deals and shortening the sales-cycle using drone photography is the goal.

Documentation + Insurance

  • FAA Certification: Now that new FAA regulations are in place, it is punishable by a hefty fine to operate a drone for commercial gain (real estate photography included) if you do not have an FAA Part 107 UAV Operator’s Certificate.
  • Liability Insurance: You do not want to be liable for any damage caused by the drone, so be sure that your photographer carries at least $1 million in liability insurance. Your brokerage may also have a policy — make sure it specifically covers drone usage.
  • Client References: An experienced drone photographer will have a list of business references.

Payment Policies

  • Deposit + Cancellation Policy: If you have great luck and the listing sells before your drone shoot, know if you are still responsible for the entire cost.
  • Price List: Ask for a price list with fixed price packages. Even if booking by the hour seems less expensive, it can be risky with variables like weather, equipment failures, and editing. Stick with companies that offer fixed price packages.
  • Rescheduling Policy: Real estate is unpredictable. Your sellers can change their plans or you can have a closing scheduled at the last minute, so make sure you know the rescheduling policy.
  • A Copy of a Blank Contract: You can answer many of these questions on your own by simply asking for a blank contract in your inquiry.

Pre-Flight Information

  • Weather Guidelines: Know what happens if the weather isn’t on your side. You want to get your listing photography done as quickly as possible, so know the rescheduling procedure if you have to move your shoot because of the weather.
  • Pre-Flight Checklist: A reputable photographer should provide a list of pre-flight recommendations to maximize everyone’s time and get the best photographs possible.

Style Options

  • Interior Video: Some drone operators use a piece of equipment called a gimbal to shoot interior drone footage. Ask if this is a service they recommend or offer. It’s important to ask for samples, as this is not the intended or primary use of a drone. Make sure the quality of their interior work matches the exterior work.
  • Sunset or Twilight Shoots : The “magic hours” at dusk offer breathtaking aerial photography and videography.
  • Staging: See if real estate marketing company offers any staging partnerships or virtual staging software . Don’t invest in top of the line photography and video and neglect to stage the property. There are opportunities for interior and exterior staging with aerial photography.

Don’t book the first drone photographer you find. The most expensive drone photographer/videographer may not be the best and the least expensive may not be the worst. Ask the right questions to find the right provider for your specific property. Make sure they are reputable and offer the services that market your listing in the best light.
