Matterport FAQs

Have a question not in our FAQs? Give us a call or email.

  • Can I highlight key selling features of a property?

Matterport recently released Matterport for iPhone. When paired with the Capture app, your iPhone can be converted into a 3D capture device to build a Matterport 3D tour. Depending on the iPhone version (must be a 6S or newer model), the resolution can be comparable to that of a Pro2 camera. Matterport for iPhone is an option when you do not have the time or the budget for the advanced service of a Pro2 capture.

  • Can you shoot outside?

Direct sunlight can interfere with the Matterport camera for a 3D scan. Fortunately, Matterport offers Matterport 360° Views, a feature that allows an outdoor space to be scanned with the same devices that capture 3D data. Matterport 360° Views are 2D spherical images, much like Google Street View, that can be added to your 3D virtual tour. They allow viewers to look up, down, and all around a location from a fixed point.

  • Do I need to make space for a lot of equipment during the shoot?

No. Your Matterport photographer will bring less equipment than is required for traditional photography or videography.  The Matterport camera is not much bigger than a large book and sits on a standard tripod.  Our photographer will then control the scan with an iPad.  No time consuming equipment setup – or space – required.

  • Do you capture every room?

Matterport 3D seamlessly captures the features of your listing. While the selection of rooms that are scanned can vary from one listing to the next, typically all major rooms of at least 100 square feet are captured. Closets (other than large walk-ins) and other small spaces do not afford the room for scanning. You can, however, choose to label closet doors and other features so that prospective buyers are aware of them.

  • How accurate are the measurements in a Matterport Digital Twin?

As the market leader for spatial data capture, Matterport makes it possible not only to explore 3D spaces, but to measure rooms, windows, doors, and furniture with a simple click or tap on a PC or mobile device with 99% accuracy.

  • How can a Matterport 3D virtual tour be viewed?

Your clients, prospective buyers, and anyone else with access to the Matterport tour link can wind their way through a virtual showcase. Like an open house, viewers can travel to any room at any time. They can zoom out to two-dimensional floor plan or dollhouse views, and zoom in to look at single items in any room. They can take measurements to determine if their table will fit in the dining room or their sofa along a wall. And they can do so on any desktop or mobile device. Anywhere. Any time. For an enhanced 3D experience, a Matterport tour can be viewed with Samsung Gear VR, Google Cardboard, or Google Daydream.

  • How do I prepare the space for a Matterport shoot?

Staging is critical to the success of a Matterport 3D Tour. Our photographers will use the latest technology to capture the space exactly as it is on the day of the shoot. We recommend that a local staging service assist with getting your property “camera ready”. In addition to staging, you should ensure that no people, animals, or other distractions are present on the day of the shoot.

  • How does Matterport work?

Matterport spaces are created using a compatible 3D camera to capture your space. The data is uploaded to Matterport where their Cortex AI platform transforms the images into a 3D digital twin that can be customized to include Mattertags™ with texts, links, and videos. When complete, the Digital Twin can be shared with anyone on any device.

  • How far will Hometrack travel to capture the digital twin of a property with Matterport?

While we are located in and serve the Baltimore/Virginia/Washington DC area, we will travel anywhere in the United States.

Please contact us for a quote for service of any space outside the local metro area.

  • How long is a Matterport 3D virtual tour available?

An advantage of Matterport is that all of the 3D virtual tours are hosted by Matterport, making your digital twins secure and affordable. One year of hosting is included with the service. If you need extended hosting, please contact us for a quote.

  • How long will it take to complete the scan?

The amount of time needed for a scan depends on how many features are being captured. In general, it takes about one hour for every 1,000 square feet of space, making an average home about a two-and-a-half hour process.

  • How might I use a Matterport Showcase?

Your Matterport 3D tour will be delivered through an embeddable and easy to share link.  Agents find success sharing Matterport 3D tours on social media sites like Facebook and Instagram, through email, on third party real estate portals, and on their own websites.

  • How will I receive the 3D tour?

We will send you a link to the Matterport site where your tour is housed within  24 hours of the shoot.  You can then embed the link wherever you want to feature the tour. You will also receive your own single property gallery to host your tour.

  • Is Matterport Just for Selling Real Estate?

Not at all. A Matterport Digital Twin of virtually any built physical space can be captured. Matterport 3D Virtual Tours and Matterport 360° Views are used in the construction, travel, leasing, and insurance industries. You can create state-of-the-art virtual tours of real estate properties, hotels, venues, retail spaces, arenas, and other locations. Many homeowners even choose to hold on to their Matterport 3D tour for insurance purposes or family keepsakes for future generations.

  • What if there is something in the tour that I didn’t want to show?

Once the scans are complete, the only way to alter images is to rescan the space. While that would include an additional charge for the service, still it is a more suitable alternative to items or distractions that might detract from the value of your digital twin. This is why careful staging is important in preparation for the shoot.

  • What is a Digital Twin?

A Matterport Digital Twin is a dimensionally accurate three dimensional virtual representation of a physical space. What separates a Matterport Digital Twin from other 3D platforms is Matterport’s ability to capture and process precise spatial data to create an immersive experience, complete with views from multiple angles, reliable measurements, and more.

  • What is the Matterport Pro2 3D camera?

The Pro2 is the gold standard for professional 3D capture. With superior photo resolution and 3D accuracy, the Pro2 lends unlimited 4K print quality photography to your 3D virtual showcase. The camera pairs with any iOS device running the Matterport Capture app. While a space can be captured with any compatible device (third-party camera or iPhone), the Pro2 offers the highest level of accuracy and quality for your digital twin.
